This variation is the first one that provides a considerable challenge to the left hand in thumb position. The general framework of the left-hand position in this variation is the octave shape, and this informs the best way to initially practice the variation. For the first stage of learning of this variation, practice with solid double stops that are clearly defined by each quarter note beat. At first, hold each double stop and slowly shift to the new position at the end of each measure. Gradually increase the speed of the double stops until you get close to the final tempo, then incorporate the main variation bowing pattern.

While working on the double stops, take a break for the left hand and work on the bowing pattern(s) with open strings. This allows the left hand to rest and maximizes the use of time in your practice session.

The sub-variations incorporate many bowing patterns that have been explored in previous variations. The difficulty lies in coordinating the left-hand shifts with the often-complex bowing patterns. Using impulses in this variation is a good way to build tempo in each sub-variation.

While there are no changes of dynamics marked in this variation, you should allow your musical intuition to guide the phrasing. As a suggestion, use contour phrasing to shape the dynamics by following the ascending and descending patterns of the variation.
