Variation 23

#upbowspiccato #wholebow #bowlift

This is a helpful variation for utilizing the whole bow length in a short amount of time in the context of an on the string note, and then using a lifting bow motion to engage the up bow spiccato on the second half of each measure. Be sure to smoothly connect the first two notes, lift after the third, then use a natural bouncing stroke as you move the bow all the way to the frog. Use a lot of bow on the first two notes of the slur to make it easier to control the bounce of the last two notes of the slur. It is difficult to control a bouncing stroke close to the tip.

In the beginning, practice this variation with an up bow staccato stroke without any bounce; as you build tempo the stroke should ‘take-off’ on its own with the fast speed of the bow required to traverse the entire bow length. Note the forte dynamic and be sure to sustain that dynamic until the pianissimo at the end.

Correction- In the third measure of the third line, the printed indication should be o.H. on the first note and Sp on the second note to indicate staying in the upper half. Since the last slur in the previous measure was labeled o.H., it is impossible to then play the next note with a full bow.
