Variation 6

#legato #dynamics #spiccato

The first measure of the two bar series is an on the string legato detached stroke similar to the first triplet in Variation 1, but further out in the bow using a forearm and wrist stroke, while the second measure of the series is a spiccato just like in Variation 2. The challenge here is to switch quickly between on the string and off the string strokes while also changing dynamics from forte to piano at the same time. With this variation, as with any other where there are immediate changes of stroke or dynamic, practice putting a one beat gap between the sudden change. In this case, placing a one beat rest between the measures allows you time to prepare for the next measure. Once that is comfortable, take away the rest, but recall the feeling of what is necessary to change the bow speed, pressure etc.

A useful skill to practice is to change to a flatter bow hair when playing the spiccato, and less hair for the on the string stroke. This helps reinforce the desired bowing style for each measure. This will be a useful skill for some later variations.

Feel the accents in the forearm, allowing the arm to ‘kick’ the accents with bow speed and pressure.
