Variation 4

Variation 4 relates back to Variation 1 but adds rapid downbow retakes every other measure and is also faster (132 vs. 116). One additional note is that there are no symbols above the note for articulation indication here. There can be little doubt that the primary objective here is to play each note in this variation from the string. This requires more effort on the part of the fingers and wrist since forearm motion is difficult to execute at the frog. To use the arm, the whole arm must move, but for a greater challenge and pedagogical benefit, limit the motion as much as possible to the fingers and wrist.
For the rapid downbow retakes, practice them slowly first and think of circles for the motion of the fingers and wrist. Try to play them as long as possible, imagining tenuto marks on them just like in the first three notes of Variation 1.
