Variation 3
#bowlift #frog #retake #colle
Variation 3 is related to Variation 1 in that each one requires a collé stroke for the last three eighth notes in each measure. This variation builds on the previous one by being in a faster tempo (138 vs 116) as well by the relative placement of the bow. Whereas Variation 1 was close to the frog, this variation is further out in the bow, closer to the middle, which makes controlling the retake portion considerably more difficult. In the first stages of learning this variation, practice it close to the frog, and then inch by inch, work your way out toward the middle as you get better at controlling the retake. Combine this with slowly increasing the metronome speed as well. Notice how the bow is landing after each lift/retake. The closer you get to the middle of the bow, the more likely it is that the bow will bounce. In the interpretation using collé, try to eliminate any bounce in the bow.
Dynamics here are important. Note the forte downbeat, and piano marking for beats 2-4. Exaggerate these to develop the ability to make rapid changes of dynamics without losing clarity and articulation of the short notes in a piano dynamic.
