Variation 39A
#sautille #spiccato #upbowspiccato #downbowspiccato
In the following two variations it is essential to establish solid intonation in all the chords. Pay special attention to the perfect fifths. Use the main variation as a place to just practice the intonation using double-stops by splitting the three-note chord into two double-stops.
This penultimate variation introduces tri-chordal bowing techniques, whereby in each variation the repeating pattern traverses all three strings. The notes in this variation that do not fall under a slur can be performed (up to tempo) with a slightly bouncing bow. Imagine a 75% sautillé and 25% spiccato stroke. A slight bounce in the stroke helps keep energy in the stroke to launch the bow into the challenging ricochet slurs.
In contrast to many of the bow techniques introduced in these variations, the string crossing ricochet slurs in this variation sometimes work best with a slightly stiff right wrist/grip while allowing the natural qualities of the hair and stick to ricochet off the string.
For sub-variations 3, 5, 7, 8, and 11, use the impulse practice technique to develop fluency of the stroke. Place a rest between each quarter beat to start, moving up to placing a rest between every two beats and so forth. Use a metronome for this to help guide your progression toward the final tempo.
