Variation 30
#wholebow #flying #upbowspiccato
Here we have the second indication of an up bow spiccato flying stroke, just like in Variation 28. The difference here is more flying notes, and a faster indicated tempo. Experiment with how much bow to use for the initial three note slur that initiates the flying stroke. Make sure to start as close to the tip as possible and use the whole bow in order to start measure 2 at the frog.
Practice the whole variation with legato slurs as well as non-flying up bow staccato while you gain comfort with the left-hand challenges. When practicing the written stroke, isolate the more difficult measures that contain string crossings across lower strings such as the fourth measure of the third line.
A bonus challenge in this variation is to make smooth and even string crossings within a slur. In the first, third, and fourth measures of the third line, for example, Ševčík writes a string crossing pattern for the second, third, and fourth notes of those measures. Use a minimal movement in the right wrist to successfully execute this stroke. Practice it in rhythms of short-long and long-short to help iron out any unevenness.
