Variation 17
#sautillé #hammer
The ‘strike (hammer)’ indication is only used in this variation. It likely implies a forceful accented articulation of the note, which here takes place in the upper half of the bow. For best results aim to strike the string as close to the tip as possible. Contrary to many healthy technical habits, this stroke is done with an engagement of some tension in the right arm to dissipate any bounce in the bow. This accented half note should start at the tip and should be sustained until the point along the hair that works best for sautillé, which is usually around a third of the way from the frog.
Imagine a dynamic here of forte for the entire variation, with a very energetic and lively sautillé throughout.
